NP Dodge Company Celebrates 150 Years

02/03/05 by NP Dodge Real Estate
The NP Dodge Company, as well as the NP Dodge family, has deep roots in this community. Shortly after Grenville Dodge made the first land purchase by the Dodge family in 1855, brothers Nathan and Grenville opened The Dodge Land Office in Council Bluffs. Grenville went on to serve as a general during the Civil War and then as chief construction engineer for the building of Union Pacific Railroad. N.P. stayed in the land business and built the foundation for one of America's oldest real estate companies, NP Dodge.

Since then, the NP Dodge Company has never gone without a Nathan Phillips Dodge at the helm, making it the nation's only real estate company to be led by the same family since its inception.

Five generations have guided the NP Dodge Company to what it is today. No longer just one of the largest full-service real estate companies in Nebraska and Iowa, NP Dodge is a family of companies in real estate, land development, property management, global relocation, title and escrow and insurance. The company's seven operating entities are made up of 500 employees and 450 sales associates.

Sandy Dodge, president/chairman of the board, said the company's success lies in its commitment to the same solid principles it had in 1855 - integrity, success and innovation. "I firmly believe that honest effort, perseverance, a willingness to innovate and an unyielding confidence in the future is all anyone needs to succeed in the business world. This is a formula that has worked for us for 150 years."

Jodee Drake-Soto, marketing director for NP Dodge Company, said the pioneering, entrepreneurial spirit of the original NP Dodge has been embedded in four generations of his namesake. "It is rare to find a family-owned company that not only survives five generations but flourishes with each and every one. NP Dodge is a unique success story in any industry," she said.

Mayor Fahey Proclaims Feb. 3 'NP Dodge Day'

02/03/05 by NP Dodge Real Estate
Mayor Mike Fahey proclaimed Feb. 3 "NP Dodge Day" at a press conference today, in recognition of NP Dodge Company's 150-year history of doing business in the community.

Sandy Dodge, president/chairman of the board, said the company is honored to be one of the city's eldest companies. "NP Dodge made its first sale in this area in 1855, and the NP Dodge Company is proud to be doing business in Omaha and Council Bluffs 150 years later," he said. "We sincerely thank Mayor Fahey for recognizing the NP Dodge legacy in such a meaningful way."

As a gesture of appreciation to the many families the company has served over the years, Dodge presented four area nonprofit organizations with life-saving defibrillators. The organizations are Lauritzen Gardens, Omaha Children's Museum, Holland Performing Arts Center and General Dodge House in Council Bluffs.

"Families are a priority for NP Dodge Company, for they are at the root of our success in this community," he said. "The four organizations receiving these lifesaving devices also serve families, and having a defibrillator on site in an emergency could mean the difference between life and death for a loved one."

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) can save lives during cardiac emergencies, said Amy Arouni, M.D., Creighton Cardiac Center cardiologist and American Heart Association board member. "The on-site presence of an AED reduces critical wait time for treatment, and as a result improves a person's chance of surviving a cardiac crisis."

Between 300,000 and 400,000 people die from cardiac arrest each year in the United States, Arouni said, and most of these deaths occur outside of the hospital. "If having a defibrillator on-site saves even one life, it's worth it," Arouni said, "NP Dodge Company's gift will make a difference."

NP Dodge Presents 4 Nonprofits with Defibrillators

02/03/05 by NP Dodge Real Estate
NP Dodge Company presented four local nonprofit organizations with Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) today in celebration of the company's 150th anniversary. Experts say the devices can save lives during cardiac emergencies.

"The on-site presence of an AED reduces critical wait time for treatment, and as a result improves a person's chance of surviving a cardiac crisis," said Amy Arouni, M.D., Creighton Cardiac Center cardiologist and American Heart Association board member. Between 300,000 and 400,000 people die from cardiac arrest each year in the United States, Arouni said, and most of these deaths occur outside of the hospital. Because on-site defibrillators are relatively new, no data yet exists on how many lives they have saved. What is clear, Arouni said, is the life-saving benefits of having them on hand. "The AHA supports placing AEDs in targeted public areas."

People of all ages and fitness levels have heart attacks, often without warning. Until now, bystanders could only call 911, administer CPR and wait for an ambulance. Today, first responders such as policemen, fire fighters and even minimally trained laypersons such as security guards and office managers can use an on-site defibrillator to save lives. Arouni said these portable devices analyze the heart's rhythm and can recognize a rhythm that requires a shock. If necessary, the rescuer can deliver an electric shock to a victim of sudden cardiac arrest. "This shock is called defibrillation, and it's intended to halt the rapid and chaotic heart activity of sudden cardiac arrest. The hope is that the heart will then re-establish an effective rhythm of its own," Arouni said. About the size of a laptop computer, the AED uses voice prompts, lights and text messages to tell the rescuer which steps to take.

Sandy Dodge, president/chairman of the board, felt that placing these devices in the community seemed like an appropriate way to give back to the families NP Dodge Company has served over the past 150 years. "While we sincerely hope they are never needed, we also believe that saving one life would make this gift worthwhile. We will also provide the staff training needed to ensure that the defibrillators are used effectively."

The American Heart Association encourages persons responsible for using the AED to take a three-hour Heartsaver AED Course. All four organizations receiving the defibrillators - Lauritzen Gardens, Omaha Children's Museum, Holland Performing Arts Center and General Dodge House - have agreed to train staff members.
